MICRO-TRENCH: FIBER OPTIC LAYING
Installing fiber optic cables using micro-trenching technology is a task that large and small Italian municipalities rely on from specialized companies. For this reason, the right tools can make the difference between a professional and a casual effort.
Fiber optic installation: tools and equipment
New technologies for installing fiber optic cables are cutting-edge for those working in road maintenance or specializing in small excavations. Installing fiber optic cables using micro-trenching technology significantly reduces labor costs. In this article, we explore the techniques used for this process.
Mini-trench and micro-trench: what are the differences?
A mini-trench is defined as a specific cut in fresh asphalt or concrete with a thickness of 5 to 7 cm wide and a depth of 40 to 45 cm. A micro-trench , on the other hand, is a cut of a maximum of 2 cm wide and 15 cm deep. These two techniques have significantly reduced cutting or demolition costs due to the speed of cutting and fiber optic installation.
Fiber optics: how to lay it with micro-trenching
Before starting the road surface cutting phase, specialized companies analyze the subsoil with a ground penetrating radar. This operation is essential to avoid unpleasant surprises. After this, the cutting phase begins with asphalt cutting machines or joint cutters.
The mini-trench , precisely because of the size of the cut, requires bulky equipment and tools with large diameters (e.g., ø800mm or Ø1000mm). The real innovation lies in the micro-trench fiber optic installation technique: in this case, smaller asphalt cutting machines can be used with specific diamond tools that guarantee an adequate cutting depth in a single pass.
Diamond wheels for microtricea
Nord Srl has developed specific tools with varying cutting thicknesses for micro-trenching technology. These tools allow for clean, precise, and fast cuts without the need to demolish the road surface.
While a standard Ø400 asphalt disc is 3.6 mm thick, we produce custom diamond segments with thicknesses ranging from 10 mm to 20 mm. Ideal for installing fiber optic fenders.
Below you will find all our main micro-cutting tools, adaptable to any type of bench cutter.
- Ø350 mm – Hole 25.4 + T – available thicknesses: 10, 12, 14, 15, 20 mm – H10 mm
- Ø400 mm – Hole 25.4 + T – available thicknesses: 10, 12, 14, 15, 20 mm – H10 mm
- Ø450 mm – Hole 25.4 + T – Available thicknesses: 10, 12, 14, 15, 20 mm – H10 mm
