Diamond Wire: What is it?
Diamond wire has been the most discussed and cutting-edge product in recent years for cutting natural stone and demolishing reinforced concrete for several years. This particular technology is simply a plasticized or rubberized metal wire with diamond beads.
It is mainly used for the following applications:
- excavation and extraction of natural stone blocks
- cutting of slabs or “slices” of marble or granite
- demolition of walls, bridges, pipes made of reinforced concrete or iron.
Diamond Wire: How Does It Work?
The general principle of diamond wire processing is the same as cutting with belts, blades or other diamond tools. Diamond beads cut or shape the treated material by abrasion. For this reason, the product must necessarily be inserted through a hole in the material that must be demolished or extracted. In the case of single or multi-wire stationary machines, two or more flywheels push the wire into the treated material.
These different types of processing are usually done wet, that is, with the use of water or lubricating liquids. This allows for the correct lubrication and cooling of the diamond pearl, guaranteeing greater performance.
The benefits of diamond wire cutting.
What are the real benefits of diamond wire cutting? The first fundamental benefit is the ability to cut extremely hard and compact materials. A process that is otherwise impossible with other demolition or cutting technologies.
Diamond wire cutting also guarantees more precision than traditional methods. This makes it the best choice for jobs where precision and tolerances are essential.
This diamond technology also allows for faster cutting and less waste. La Nord Srl products have pearls with diameters between Ø12 and Ø10 mm for demolition and between Ø10 and Ø5.3 mm for processing marble and granite blocks.
Precisely for these reasons, cutting with this technology is the most convenient in the medium-long term in terms of cost per ml or m2 cut for certain applications.
Diamond wire cutting is silent and guarantees minimal vibrations during its processing. This important benefit is essential when working in sensitive spaces such as schools or hospitals.
The last fundamental benefit is in the use of manpower. In fact, the new generation machines are faster and can be used with few operators.
Underwater diamond cutting
Another important benefit is the use underwater as well as on the surface. This process is essential for demolishing buildings or obstacles below the sea or lake surface. The diamond wire is therefore an excellent solution also for water companies that need to demolish or replace large concrete or iron pipes.
What are the applications for diamond wire cutting?
Diamond wire cutting is certainly the most powerful and fastest technology for processing reinforced concrete and other building materials:
- Demolition
- Large steel structures, such as the decommissioning of obsolete mine sites
- Reinforced concrete structures such as bridges, jetties, dams and industrial floors
- Walls, from floor to ceiling
- Narrow and very precise parts
- Sturdy steel or iron
- Large blocks of granite, marble and natural stone
