3 professional techniques for cutting and coring reinforced concrete.
How do I cut reinforced concrete? Specialists use different techniques based on the particularity of the work to be done. In this article we will analyze what the 6 main techniques are. The summary of these techniques will allow you to learn which tools and machinery to use.
Concrete cutting technique with holes (coring machine)
The possibility of using diamond in the form of powder in various grain sizes has allowed us to develop tools suitable for every type of work. Diamond, its crystals and metal mixtures are essential to guarantee a precise cut according to the needs of the construction site. Nord produces diamond tips or drills suitable for every material such as stone, concrete, reinforced concrete, abrasive materials. This variable makes diamond tools highly convenient and increasingly used by demolishers, companies, craftsmen and laboratories.
Some customizations of the diamond core bit for reinforced concrete allow for truly special uses. Dry coring for example with the use of manual loaders. Another level of customization is the cutting depth. In fact, we produce core bits up to 2m high for coring highly reinforced concrete structures. There are no limits for the production of diamond core bits with ad hoc diameters. The largest diamond core bit we have produced is about 1800mm for coring pre-stressed concrete wells.
Designers also consider diamond core drills and core bits for cutting reinforced concrete walls. This is why core drill manufacturers are offering solutions with increasingly longer guide “strokes” on the market. The same goes for the width of the guides to allow for the assembly of large-diameter diamond core bits.
The latest core drills on the market also have remote control systems in order to speed up the core drilling process and reduce costs.
Cutting technique with wall saws and diamond discs
Diamond discs were created for the marble sector through the use of bridge saws. It is precisely from this sector that professionals in the demolition of reinforced concrete have taken inspiration. The speed and precision of cutting of diamond tools has almost completely replaced traditional abrasive discs. The use of cutting reinforced concrete with diamond discs is an operation that has been consolidated for years.
Even more interesting information is the unbridled race to evolve this tool. Each manufacturer modifies the formula of its diamond segment in order to offer more durable and faster solutions. To date, cutting reinforced concrete using diamond discs and wall saws remains the most convenient solution in terms of time and costs.
How to cut reinforced concrete thicker than 500mm? The convenience of linear cutting on concrete with diamond blades lies precisely in the cutting thickness. Nord produces diamond blades for reinforced concrete up to 2200mm in diameter.
However, the thin thickness of the core, the maneuverability of the tool on site and the use of smaller diameters to perform pre-cutting operations limit its activity. In cases of cuts on reinforced concrete above 700 mm, it is now more convenient to use diamond wire and the related machinery.
Wall cutting machines
With regard to the machinery for cutting reinforced concrete, we can say that electric motors are replacing hydraulic ones. Ergonomics, speed of disassembly, weight, ease of changing the revolutions are just some of the advantages that are obtained with wall cutting machines with electric motors. The new electric motor machines also need two pipes for their operation. (power pipe and water pipe).
Another positive note is all the accessories available with these types of machines: stands, tracks of various lengths, quick couplings for installing the machine and last but not least the remote control.
Reinforced concrete cutting technique with diamond ring cutters
This reinforced concrete cutting technique is the newcomer and is becoming more and more popular. The diamond ring usually with a diameter of 350 mm is operated by a peripheral system of two points. It may seem similar to the technique reported above. However, a diamond ring for reinforced concrete allows you to cut up to a depth of 260 mm. The same depth is cut with wall saws and a blade with a diameter of Ø600 mm.
