How to Cut Marble with an Angle Grinder
Have you purchased a slab of marble or do you already have one and need to cut it to size? You will need an angle grinder and a water hose to do this job. Read this simple guide to cutting marble.
Are you sure you're going to cut marble?
Sorry if I prefer to clarify two things, but it is essential to know if you are going to cut marble for real or not. There are many natural stones and they are often called marble. However, there is a huge difference between marble, granite, gneiss, sandstone and other types of natural stones.
Understanding what you are actually cutting is essential to using the right diamond tool. This small difference can significantly change the degree and quality of finish of your cut. When you have to trim a marble tile, it is essential that the edge is sharp without chipping.
We recognize the marble
Marble is a unique material with a homogeneous color and small or large veins inside it. White Carrara is an example of this and is the marble par excellence. Travertine and Botticino are two other natural materials associated with marble, but in reality very different. Travertine for example is a calcareous rock that has a very different origin and composition compared to a classic marble.
We recognize granite
Granite is a very hard and resistant natural material. Unlike marble, it is not porous and is therefore ideal for the production of kitchen tops or various shelves. Italy is a large producer of granite present in many different colors: white, black, red, gray. For us laymen it is recognizable by its characteristic dotted pattern.
Do you need to cut marble? Here's how:
First of all, it is essential to trace a straight line on the surface that corresponds to the cutting line. Now place some masking tape on the line and trace the line itself. Masking tape is a useful ally for having a cleaner cut even with an inexperienced hand.
Wear protective gloves and an eye mask. Also use headphones to avoid being deafened by the noise.
Now turn on the water and let it run along the cutting line in front of the tool. This will allow you to have a clean cut and not overheat the diamond blade. Secure the sheet you need to cut on a rigid surface.
Now turn on the grinder and start cutting the marble following the line you drew previously. You will notice that the water will allow you to make a very fast and clean cut.
