How to Cut Marble with an Angle Grinder
Have you purchased a slab of marble or already have one and need to cut it to size? You'll need an angle grinder and a hose for this job. Read this simple guide to cutting marble.
Are you sure you're going to cut marble?
Forgive me for specifying two things, but it's crucial to know whether you're actually cutting marble or not. There are many different types of natural stone, often referred to as marble. However, there's a huge difference between marble, granite, gneiss, sandstone, and other types of natural stone.
Understanding what you're actually cutting is crucial to using the right diamond tool. This small difference can significantly impact the finish and quality of your cut. When trimming a marble tile, it's crucial that the edge is sharp and free of chipping.
- We recognize the marble
Marble is a unique material with a uniform color and small or large veins throughout. Carrara white is an example of this and is the marble par excellence. Travertine and Botticino are two other natural materials associated with marble, but are actually very different. Travertine, for example, is a limestone rock with a very different origin and composition than traditional marble.
- We recognize granite
Granite is a very hard and durable natural material. Unlike marble, it is non-porous and is therefore ideal for kitchen countertops and other countertops. Italy is a major producer of granite, which comes in many different colors: white, black, red, and gray. To the uninitiated, it is recognizable by its characteristic speckled pattern.
Here's how:
First, it's essential to draw a straight line on the surface that corresponds to the cutting line. Now place masking tape on the line and trace it. Masking tape is a useful ally for achieving a cleaner cut, even with an inexperienced hand.
Wear protective gloves and an eye mask. Also use headphones to avoid being deafened by the noise.
Now turn on the water and run it along the cutting line at the front of the tool. This will ensure a clean cut and avoid overheating the diamond blade. Secure the sheet you need to cut to a rigid surface.
Now turn on the grinder and start cutting the marble, following the previously drawn line. You'll notice that the water will allow you to make a very quick and clean cut.
Which diamond blade should I use?
As you can imagine, using the right diamond tool is essential for cutting marble. For this reason, we've already seen the difference between marble and granite.
